The Irish Hand Surgery Society started off originally as the Irish Hand Club. This organisation was established in the early 1980’s by a group of Consultants from the specialties of Plastic Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery who had a special interest in Hand Surgery. It met anually to present scientific papers and to discuss interesting or complex case histories.  As the members of this informal group grew and the specialty become more established the Irish Hand Surgery Society was established. The first President was Mr Seamus O’Rian who was succeeded two years later by Mr John Varian.
